Gnomedex Product Demonstration: Pixsy

30 06 2006

Pixsy is a photo and video search engine. The interesting thing is that their primary business model is to provide custom photo and video search for any web site that’s interested in offering that service to their users. They plan to monetize it through an advertising network.

Some of the aggregated photo and video sites include:

  • Reuters
  • Buzznet
  • The New York Times
  • Fotolia
  • Youtube
  • StarPulse
  • MSNBC
  • Revver
  • ROOtv
  • BBC
  • FreeFoto
  • StupidVideos.com

Pixsy was named “Hottest Company” at Under the Radar this year.

Product Launch: BlueDot

30 06 2006

BlueDot launched at Gnomedex today. Its founder is positioning it as the intersection between friends and information. I snagged my usual login but I’m using Flock as my browser and it doesn’t like a lot of FireFox plugins, particularly those that involve the use of the links bar.

I’ll play with it when I get back home.

Gnomedex Discussion Leader: Steve Gillmor

30 06 2006

After stepping down from his position on the board of AttentionTrust, Steve Gillmor has announced that his new company, GestureBank and Seth Goldstein’s Root Markets, are working together on creating the Attention Operating System.

The jointly owned company creating the Attention OS will be called AttentionSoft.

Steve thinks that Ray Ozzie and Microsoft could jump into this game quickly and create goodwill with consumers as a tactic against Google.

“The page view model is being replaced. That data is crap.” (??)

Steve Rubel: Why should all these clouds release attention data?

Gnomedex Keynote: Senator John Edwards

30 06 2006

Senator Edwards is a strong supporter of Net Neutrality.

Marc Canter: “Third generation Red Diaper Baby. My father was a commie, my grandfather was a commie… I’m looking for some balls.”

When people speak in a human voice, other humans recognize it. Too many politicians speak like PR people. Do you recognize yourself when you start to talk from that perspective?

Edwards: “Yes, I recognize when I get that way - it’s hard to shed the trappings of a media trained politician. We’ve been trained to do the wrong thing and that’s the problem.”

In a world where communities aren’t geographic, how do you create vibrant local bases to create change?

OneCorps encourages people to go out and elect democrats in their area.

What do you think about monitoring Internet traffic?

Edwards: “We have to be very careful to maintain the freedom of the Internet, but we still need to pay attention to things like child predators and the like.”

What are politicians like yourself doing to change the language and use it better than, say, republicans?

Edwards: “Language matters, but I think there’s too much time spent on ’strategy’ and not enough on ‘doing the right thing.’ Language matters when talking about the issues, but integrity and character are more important when choosing a leader.”

What’s going to be the next technology that effects the next presidential election?

Edwards: “Blogs have been successful, but how do you empower people to generate the ideas and get them up to their leaders and potential leaders. Text messaging has been successful.”

Mitch Ratcliffe: “Get someone to travel with you on the campaign bus and allow citizens to record what’s happening during that time.”

Edwards: People don’t have the kind of information they should have to make decisions about their leaders and where their country should go. Top-down, plastic communications from politicians makes people distrusting.”

Have you thought about applying reality TV tactics toward getting your message across?

Edwards: Yes, tell me how.

Phil Torrone: “Can we get paper records from electronic voting machines? Can we make them open source? How these things work should be completely transparent.”

Steve Gillmor: “How can you approach the problems of this country in the same way you might as a trial lawyer?”

Edwards: “Anyone who has the capacity to convince people knows that its about more than just the facts. It’s about credibility and trust.”

Gnomedex Discussion Leader: Dave Dederer

Business models for artists

Touring provides the greatest amount of control. A significant number of artists generate cash by performing at corporate functions.

Control of the master recordings are being owned more and more by artists.

Performance royalties by ASCAP and BMI.

Merchandise. A lot of artists make a large part of their profit from merchandise.

How and when will music people get it and how can we help them?

IODA just did a deal with The Harry Fox Agency. IODAPromonet allows bloggers and podcasters to play and promote music from independent artists. 12,000 tracks and 2500 independent labels.

Eventful Demand (from eventful.com) enables people to organize events and get artists to come to their town.

Dave is working with Melodeo on their advisory board.

What exactly does the label do for you except take your money?

Dave: “We made a lot of money and they made a lot more. Distribution and promotion was the key. Without a partner capitalized like Sony Music, it never would have happened.”

“Anybody can be a store to monetize music.”

What’s the end game?

Dave: “The online music business is at 1/2 percent of its potential.”

Ethan Kaplan, Warner Brothers Music: “We nurture talent. We distribute talent. We market talent.”

Companies mentioned: YouTube, Apple iTunes, Sony Music

Gnomedex Discussion Leader: Michael Arrington

30 06 2006

Discussion Leader: Michael Arrington

Buzz Bruggeman: Net Neutrality and D.C. will threaten innovation in this market.

Kathy Gill: “Geeks should not name things.” (Amen!)

Steve Rubel: “Advertising won’t support all of these companies.”

Why will companies succeed now as opposed to the companies in the last bust?

Arrington: “Companies are not going public and the cost of creating them is a fraction of what it cost in 1998. They can be successful without the excess.” (Paraphrased)

“Don’t use my own facts against me…”

Companies Mike mentioned: SwapTree, Digg, YouTube

The Conversations Network Goes Giga with For-Profit Partner Company

30 06 2006

If you’re a member of the Conversations Network, then you probably received a special announcement from Doug Kaye last night.

The Conversations Network will now have a for-profit arm called GigaVox Media. Doug Kaye will take on the role of CTO while the CEO will be none of other than Mr. Podcast Solutions himself, Michael Geoghegan.

What’s a GigaVox?

Here’s an excerpt from Doug’s message:

GigaVox Media and The Conversations Network will do many similar things. At the very least, both companies will produce podcasts of spoken-word events as we’ve done for these past three years. IT Conversations, the Podcast Academy and some new channels such as Open Source Conversations (launching next month) will join GigaVox Media where they can flourish thanks to the support of commercial sponsorships. The Conversations Network will continue to be the home of Social Innovation Conversations and other channels better suited to the non-profit world. Both companies will expand independently into additional areas, as you’ll hear about in the weeks and months to come.

Congratulations Doug and Michael. I’m looking forward to what you’ll build together.

BYOC to Gnomedex (Bring your own connectivity)

29 06 2006

If you were at last year’s Gnomedex, you may remember what a difficult time everyone was having getting connected to the net via Wi-Fi. Apparently, when Chris and Ponzi told the conference center that there would be lots of people connecting to the net, they’d never hosted a Gnomedex before!

If you have EV-DO connectivity, Chris is recommending that you use it at the conference in order to reduce the congestion on the conference center network and Wi-Fi base stations.

That’s what I’m using right now at my hotel: my Treo 700p connected to my MacBook via Bluetooth. (I saved the company $30, too since there’s a $10 daily fee for a net connection here.) It’s pretty cool, except that you have to make sure you have a process running that will keep the connection alive, otherwise you have to reconnect every few minutes. I’ve found that keeping my blog open in a a browser works as the flickr flash widget continually polls my flickr account for photos.

With all that said, if I remember correctly the Bell Harbor Conference Center was a virtual dead zone for cell phone connectivity, so I have no idea if this will work inside the main room. Plus, how many connections can an EV-DO tower handle at one time? It could end up being slower than the Wi-Fi connectivity. We’ll see…

Ethan Kaplan wants to talk about buying digital content at Gnomedex

29 06 2006

Ethan Kaplan’s talk at Gnomedex (Saturday, July 1st @ 11:30a) will be about buying digital audio and video:

I’ve been thinking about what I want to talk about at Gnomedex later this week, and I keep coming around to a blog post I made about the intrinsic monetary value of digital content, and how it is ascribed.

The $39 Dollar Song and 6 Cent Ringtone didn’t really light up the charts on the TechMeme saturated blogosphere, but it is a valid discussion to have, especially when the business of content is exploding as it is (to use Jeff Jarvis’ parlance).

Given who I work for and my experience, I know a little something about that. ;) I’ll be happy to contribute to that discussion and hope to be able to add some value.
