Moleskine Upgrade: BookSling

30 12 2006

The BookSling is a simple, ingenious little invention that enables you to attach up to two pens to your Moleskine notebook while also providing a useful, colorful bookmark.

Just wrap the elastic band around the front or back cover of your notebook and you’re in business. I just ordered one in “Mango”…

Google’s 2006 Year-End Zeitgeist

29 12 2006

Google has posted the Zeitgeist for 2006 based on a year’s worth of searches. Nothing too surprising.

I more enjoyed reading about their selection rationale than the Zeitgeist itself.

Microsoft Files Patent Application for RSS

28 12 2006

Pathetic. Don’t they think that the entire Internet community is going to do their damnedest to demonstrate prior art? What about all the work that Dave Winer and others have put into RSS? What about ATOM?

Read the application here. [via TechMeme]

Getting Gmail Mobile to Work on your Treo

28 12 2006

After some tweaking, I was able to get Gmail Mobile working on my Treo 700p. While not officially supported on the Palm OS, it appears to function just fine. Here’s what you do:

  1. Download and install IBM’s “WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment Technology for Palm.” (It’s a Java Virtual Machine (JVM))
  2. Download and install Gmail Mobile.

You can install these over-the-air or from your desktop via Hotsync. I went with the former approach. (Ever since we moved to an Exchange Server at the office, I don’t bother to sync my Treo anymore except to restore the occasionally lost file…)

There’s some fiddling you’ll have to do to get Gmail installed under the IBM JVM, but it’s not all that difficult.

It doesn’t check mail in the background so when you launch Gmail Mobile, you can use only that application. To use another app, you’ll have to exit Gmail Mobile.

Gmail Mobile also keeps asking if it’s OK to use your data plan, which can get pretty annoying especially since I have an unlimited data plan. I guess they don’t want users to have any surprises when their cellular bill arrives. Hopefully they’ll allow this explicit check to be disabled in future versions.

The key commands are a bit odd as well. For instance, deleting a message or “conversation” is done by pressing the “7″ key whereas I’m used to pressing “d” on Chatteremail.

All told, it works and it works a lot better than dealing with Gmail’s non-standard implementation of POP3 protocols in Chatteremail or other mobile/desktop POP clients.

I haven’t tried it, but I would imagine the installation and user experience would be the same on the Treo 650 and 680.

Gmail’s Mail Fetcher will support POP3

28 12 2006

While I was able to get Gmail Mobile running on my Treo 700p, it’s still not as good as using Chatteremail with a standard POP3 or, dare I say it, IMAP account.

Google is going to release Gmail Mail Fetcher which will allow you to retrieve mail from as many as five POP3 accounts.

If Google respects the standard “delete mail on server when deleted in mail application,” this could be the answer to my mobile mail challenge while using Gmail.

Google Operating System has the details - and screenshots.

A Very Geeky Christmas

28 12 2006

Yes, it was a very geeky Christmas for me (again) this year. Under the Festivus pole were:

And finally, the geekiest (but really, most practical) gift I received this year:

This is a must-have for business travel. I can fit nearly every gadget, wallet, sunglasses, watch, notebook, iPod, book, keys, tickets and other paperwork in this thing and not have to worry about getting through security. I just take the vest off, stick it in one of those silly plastic tubs that the TSA gives me and send the whole thing through the x-ray machine. Done.

I have a Scott eVest Fleece that I use most of the time but sometimes, the weather is just too warm to wear it. (For instance, my upcoming trip to CES in Las Vegas, where I’ll be speaking on a panel about podcasting.) Yes, I’ll look like a big dork getting to and from the airport, but it’s so convenient, I just don’t care.
;)
