I want an iPhone. But not yet.

29 06 2007

Yes. I want an iPhone. However, I won’t get one until:

1) It becomes available on Verizon

OR

2) AT&T’s network coverage improves

AND

3) AT&T delivers a real 3G network

Until then, I’ll stick with my BlackBerry 8830, thankyouverymuch.

The Value of Search in The Digital Media Ecosystem

28 06 2007

David Berkowitz has a great post containing five insights on the value of search in Digital Media. Here’s a taste:

  1. As campaign budgets drop, the share that’s digital rises.
  2. TV beats the Web in research studies.
  3. Use search to create demand, not just capture it.
  4. Bigger than Roddick vs. Federer: core vs. mass.
  5. When it’s time to launch a site, pre-launch it with a coming-soon page to give engines a chance to spider it.

Jump to David’s blog for the details.

National Study on the Internet

28 06 2007

I was contacted recently by a researcher at Stony Brook University in New York. He asked that I make available to readers an opportunity to participate in a national study of how people make sense of the information they encounter on the Internet.

The survey takes roughly 10 minutes or so to complete, and responses are completely anonymous. Participants will be eligible to enter a raffle for a $50 Gift Certificate to Amazon.com, compliments of the student and the University.

Please take a few moments to complete this survey which can be found here.

Note: This study has been approved by Stony Brook University’s Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects.

Amazon Askville

28 06 2007

This morning I received an invitation to Amazon Askville, a free question and answer marketplace that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com.

“Marketplace” might be the wrong descriptor as it’s free to ask or answer a question. However, participants do earn “Experience Points” which allows them to build a reputation within this community.

Of course, not all members of the community are equal at all times. The concept of earning (and learning) “Superpowers” shifts the whole Q & A marketplace concept to that of a game.

1. What are superpowers?

Superpowers are special powers and privileges that users can use on Askville. To be eligible to get superpowers you must reach at least level 1 in any topic (you do this by answering enough questions, which will earn you experience points, in a topic to reach level 1). Whenever you reach a new level, you will have the ability to learn additional superpowers for that level. For example, once you have reached level 2 in any topic you will be allowed to learn a maximum of two “level 1″ superpowers and one “level 2″ superpower (see chart here).

We currently offer two Superpowers in both Level 1 and Level 2:

  • Voting Authority Superpower (Level 1 & 2)
  • Coin Earning Multiplier Superpower (Level 1 & 2)

Surprisingly, Amazon is trying to monetize the site using Google AdSense. I’m assuming this is because their ClickRiver Ads system is optimized for the Amazon.com ecommerce store.

The site is in direct competition with Yahoo! Answers.

Contemplating a Home Media Center

26 06 2007

After getting an HDTV for my birthday, I’ve been wondering how to handle all types of content - hi-def or otherwise. After much consternation, I think I’ve settled on a solution for a home media center:

  • HD Tuner/DVR from Comcast. I was debating whether or not to buy a TiVo with CableCard support, but I’ve decided to continue using this for now. You can’t beat the price, regardless of the crappy software.
  • Upconverting DVD Player. Purchased one this weekend at BestBuy. At times, the difference can be either dramatic or “meh.” It definitely improves the quality, though.
  • Apple TV. Yes, I was debating whether or not to get a Mac mini to use as a DVD player/media server. However, given that I’ve got nearly a terabyte of external firewire storage hanging off the old G4 upstairs, I’ve decided to store it there and encode my DVD’s in a format that’s optimized for the Apple TV.

At the moment, that’s only 720p. Hopefully that will improve over time, since this sucker’s got 64 mb of dedicated VRAM. Of course, I have to hope that my ‘G’ wi-fi will provide enough bandwidth. If not, I’ve been investigating Powerline Networking gear.

Given that I’ve just made myriad gadget purchases, buying an Apple TV right now will have a very low WAF. I’ll wait a couple of months to improve my score. ;)
